I love like the moon can wash me
anew, like the tide can take me away.
I love like the sun will kiss my skin
golden and confuse my eyes
until I see everything with cheer.
I still love, despite the daggers
slashed at my heart, despite
the splinters left from the time
you stabbed me with glass.

I love like heaven is filled
with my friends, and hell
is empty. I love like kisses
given away aplenty.
I love like a child, drawing
hearts and figures,
and pointing to each one
in turn. I love like the angels,
like singing in clouds
is not enough. I love,
despite heartbreak,
despite past failures in love.

I love, I love, I love.
That doesn’t mean
I have to love you.

 A Woman's Worst Nightmare

by Mary Dickson
© 1996

"Lots of Men Are Glad One Woman is Gone," a recent newspaper headline announced. "Some men believe Stephanie Dawn Kirk istheir worst nightmare come true," the article by a Salt Lake City writer began.

I've been particularly curious lately about a man's worst nightmare. After spending more than a year working with producer ColleenCasto on No Safe Place, a PBS documentary about the origins of violence against women, I know a lot about women's fears. Men'sfears are more foreign to me. Stephanie Kirk, the subject of the newspaper article, looked harmless enough. She was young, withlong brown hair, and too much eyeliner. But apparently, this young woman is a man's worst nightmare.

What had she done to strike terror in men? She had never physically hurt any of the men mentioned in the article. What she haddone, they claimed, is to falsely accuse them of raping or beating her.

I don't mean to underplay men's fears or this woman's damaging accusations. But what this story underscored for me was the verydifferent way that men and women perceive their own safety.

Another story played in the local media the same week, a story that represented a lot of women's nightmares, though no reportsdescribed it as such. A woman was jogging at 5:45 a.m. in a suburban neighborhood when a man grabbed her, dragged her behind acement wall, repeatedly banged her head into the wall, and brutally raped her. The rape is the kind of story that makes womenrealize how vulnerable we really are. It makes us think twice about walking through a darkened parking lot, running a simple errandafter dark, or jogging alone. We are targets everyday in ways we don't even realize. Because of our gender, we must constantlythink about how to be safe. Fear proscribes how and where we live, where we walk, where we park, where we sleep, eat and travel. As women, we know there are some things we cannot -- or rather, should not -- do, some places we should not go. We've seen themovies, we've read the articles, we know the statistics. The media is our collective storyteller and the story it tells us over and overagain is that there is no safe place -- not on the roads where we drive, on the streets where we walk, not even in the house wherewe live. We feel at risk because we are.

When we started working on our documentary film, we began keeping a file of clippings about the abuse women suffer at the handsof men -- a pregnant young woman shot by her boyfriend, a woman assaulted and run over by her attacker's car, a woman who hadsuffered a stroke bludgeoned to death by her husband, a young mother and her two-year-old daughter murdered by a spurnedboyfriend, a seven-year-old sodomized by her father’s friend. Sometimes the stories appeared almost daily, often two or more in thesame paper. Our files so soon started to bulge that I gave up adding anymore disheartening evidence. Not one of the accounts rana headline declaring, "he was a woman's worst nightmare," even though the accused's crimes included stabbing, raping, choking, beating, and brutally murdering females.

At the same time, we started hearing stories from our own acquaintances about their experiences: stalkings, sexual assaults, battering. We were shocked a highly successful friend told about a husband who had pointed a gun at her head and threatened tokill her if she left him. We were stunned when we learned that the mother of a friend was raped in her own home at 10:30 on a warmsummer night. Everyone, it seemed, had a story. A woman’s worst nightmare? For too many of us, the most intimate of crimes is abitter reality.

According to Senator Joseph Biden, who pushed for the law to punish violence against women, "the single greatest danger to awoman's health is violence from men." Of course, the vast majority of men -- honorable men -- don't hurt women, and women aren'tthe only victims of violence. But the fact is, women are physically more vulnerable. We learn early that we must take extraprecautions to protect ourselves.

We may be afraid of strangers, but it is the most intimate of strangers -- a husband, a lover, a friend -- who is most likely to hurt us.According to a U.S. Justice Department study, two-thirds of violent attacks against women are committed by someone the womanknows. Can we ever be too wary?

A woman's worst nightmare? That's pretty easy. Novelist Margaret Atwood writes that when she asked a male friend why men feelthreatened by women, he answered, "They are afraid women will laugh at them." When she asked a group of women why they feelthreatened by men, they said, "We're afraid of being killed."

If you ask a woman what she is afraid of and what she does to protect herself, she'll give you a list of specifics. Ask a man thesame question, and he might not understand what you mean. While we were working on our documentary, we conducted aninformal survey, asking that very question to men and women. Their answers were enlightening. Typically, women were afraid ofphysical violence or they were afraid for their children's safety.

"I worry sometimes that I might get attacked or something by some guy because I run in the morning and it's always real dark. I gota dog, so that I can run with him, and I also carry mace on me now when I run."

"I'm most afraid of being attacked by a man, especially if I'm out jogging or riding my bike or walking. I don't go out alone at night. Iused to run with headphones on and I don't do that anymore so that I can be aware of what's going on around me."

"I'm always afraid in a situation where there's somebody that could overpower me easily. I lock my doors, park in lighted areas, don't run in dark areas."

"I'm afraid everytime I take my garbage out at night, because I know that women have been attacked and raped just by simplytaking the garbage out, being caught unaware at nighttime. I always take my two dogs with me when I take out the garbage."

For women, the fears are specific. Men, on the other hand, tended to be more afraid of failure or being humiliated.

"I'm most afraid of being stupid."

"Failure is the dominant fear in my life."

"Making the wrong decision and having to live with it."

"I think I'm most afraid of an overall loss of control."

"As a man, I'm afraid of very little."

Most men don't understand the lingering fears of women. When a co-worker complained to her husband she didn't like working thelate shift because she was afraid to go to her car, he asked her why she didn't just tuck her blond hair under a baseball cap.

It's not that women are perpetually frightened or immobilized by fear. Rather it's that we know we must constantly be wary. We lookover our shoulder in the parking lot, hold our keys in our hands as we leave the building, check out who's in the elevator, lock ourwindows even on a sweltering summer night -- a hundred small gestures that become second nature to a woman. We takeprecautions a man never considers.

I recently spent an afternoon with a single friend while a police officer did a security check of her home. (She didn't want to be alonein her house with a stranger, even though he was a policeman). I doubt many man would have considered such a check necessary. Not long ago a friend of mine called to ask me to stay with her for a few nights. Her husband was leaving town and she didn't wantto stay in the house alone. I went because my husband was out of town on the same weekend and I didn't want to stay home aloneeither. If you're a man this won't make any sense to you. But if you're a woman alone in a big house, doors and windows can keepyou up at night. There are plenty of bad guys out there and only a door or a window separates them from us. Though my windowsare painted shut, the doors double locked and deadbolted, I still have an escape route plotted out in case I actually hear someoneclimbing up the steep stairs to the hallway outside the bedroom. I realize this is ridiculous, but who can help the dark demons thatthe night summons? Do men go through these elaborate scenarios in the dead of the night, trying to map out an escape route? I'venever met one who did. But most women I know have a plan. We take precautions.

A 49-year-old woman we interviewed for our documentary thought she had taken precautions. She was raped a few months ago inher home when she heard her dog barking and opened the door to let it in. A masked stranger with a knife grabbed her, dragged herinto the house and raped her.

"I have mace on my keychain, but you don't run outside to see what your dog's barking at with your mace in hand," she says."Maybe you should go everywhere with it in your hand. All women are vulnerable like I am. And if they don't realize it, they should.Because you never know what's going to happen. You never ever now when it's going to happen. And you always need to bechecking your back."

It's a reality that makes Maggie resentful. "First it's the evenings that I lost, and now it's freedom around my own home. It seemslike we just keep having more and more things that we have to watch out for, and more and more freedoms we lose, just by ourgender."

The ever-controversial Camilia Paglia says women are dreaming if they think anything will change. "Feminism keeps saying thesexes are the same. It keeps telling women they can do anything, go anywhere, say anything, wear anything. No, they can't.Women will always be in sexual danger," she writes in her book Sex, Art and American Culture.

To illustrate, she relates the story of a male student who slept in a passageway of the Great Pyramid in Egypt. "I will neverexperience that. I am a woman. I am not stupid enough to believe I could ever be safe there. There is a world of solitary adventure Iwill never have. Women have always known these somber truths."

While we must remedy social injustice whenever we can, Paglia says we must realize that there are some things we can neverchange. An anthropologist friend of mine who comes from a perspective of looking at cultures past and present, agrees with her.She says women will forever be prey because of the differences between the sexes. They may be right. I doubt I'll ever walk alonein certain places or stop locking doors and windows.

"Women have well-founded fears," 24-year-old Jason told me. "I understand it, but I've never experienced it. I never plan where Iwalk the dog or park my car. Why should I? I'm a man." I hold out hope that more men, like Jason, are beginning to understandwomen's fears and to realize that women have a different reality of their own safety than do men. Society won't take women's fearsseriously until men understand our vulnerability. Until men join with women to say no to violence, whether it's on the streets or inour homes, nothing is likely to change. As women, we can take all the precautions imaginable, but the ultimate answer lies withineach man and woman and what we will or will not tolerate as individuals, as communities and as a nation to allow our daughters, our sisters, our mothers and all the women in our lives to live without fear.

The intellectual is always showing off;
The lover is always getting lost.
The intellectual runs away, afraid of drowning;
the whole business of love is to drown in the sea.
Intellectuals plan their repose;
lovers are ashamed to rest.
The lover is always alone, even surrounded with people;
like water and oil, he remains apart.
The man who goes to the trouble
of giving advice to a lover
gets nothing. He’s mocked by passion.
Love is like musk. It attracts attention.
Love is a tree, and lovers are its shade.

Be with those who help your being.
Don't sit with indifferent people, whose breath
comes cold out of their mouths.
Not these visible forms, your work is deeper.

A chunk of dirt thrown in the air breaks to pieces.
If you don't try to fly,
and so break yourself apart,
you will be broken open by death,
when it's too late for all you could become.

Leaves get yellow. The tree puts out fresh roots
and makes them green.
Why are you so content with a love that turns you yellow?

I am smart, maybe smarter that you but definitely too smart for my own good.

I smoke. I was smoking long before we meet each other and I will continue smoking after you have gone, because it is you who will go.

And maybe, just maybe, I will die form a lung cancer or and emphysema and I am ok with that.

I don’t wear tons of makeup. In fact, some days I don’t wear any make up at all. And the days I do wear it I am not doing it for you.

I snore…loudly…and this fact annoys me more that it will ever annoy you.

I sometimes speak a lot and other days I don’t fell like speaking and will answer in short phrases or monosyllables. And it may be related to something you did or it may not have anything to do with you.

I am strong willed.

I sometimes cry, just because I need to.

But what you will come to hate the most about me is the fact that I never be able to love you the same way you love me.

"Staying After"
Linda Gregg

I grew up with horses and poems
when that was the time for that.
Then Ginsberg and Orlovsky
in the Fillmore West when
everybody was dancing. I sat
in the balcony with my legs
pushed through the railing,
watching Janis Joplin sing.
Women have houses now, and children.
I live alone in a kind of luxury.
I wake when I feel like it,
read what Rilke wrote to Tsvetaeva.
At night I watch the apartments
whose windows are still lit
after midnight. I fell in love.
I believed people. And even now
I love the yellow light shining
down on the dirty brick wall.

yep. If ever needed further proof of the fact that I am crazy.
here it is:

I speak to my cat.
and she answers me.

or, to be more precise, she speaks to me and I answer her.
We obviously use cat tongue because human tongue is way too basic for cats and it can not encompass all the complexities of cat emotions.

Truth is I am able to hold conversations with my cat, and this is very important and interesting because I am almost fluid now in cat chat and so I have begin to understand that they (the cats) are actually a very developed and highly intelligent species that is able to control humans and are manipulating our evolution so as to breed the perfect petter.

Even after finding that I am no more than the product of an elegant and elaborated breeding program I feel no need to complain about it. But I do have an overwhelming necessity to pet my cat.

"Ghazal: what love takes"
Juliet P. Howard

I’m sleeping as I write this; you’re standing over me crying
while Ella belts out: No, no they can’t take that away from me

If this is all I can get, your hand on my shoulder in the dream,
lips warm against my neck, I’ll take that

The alarm clock becomes enemy; I press snooze every few minutes,
search for you and finally press stop when I can’t take it any more

Please don’t mistake this for a love poem – I stopped writing those
damn things once you left; anyhow, that last poem I wrote: you wouldn’t take it

I call my mama and ask her how she lived all those decades
knowing her lover would never fully be hers and she said: chile, you just take it

Wake up! Rewind routine daily, tuck kids in, cook dinner work round the clock,
leave patience on the dining room table while making breakfast, and the kids take it

As I wake from the dream, your tears fall from my eyes and I ask myself:
J why do you complicate love? Why can’t you just take it?

So, since mister Moffat is involved in the goodbye of Rory and Amy I am preparing myself to share some tears this Dr. Who season. But from the time being (and while I stock up on chocolate and serotonine) I am very very exited for the new Who trailer.

and I see with my magic eye a space cowboy I used to like hidden under a massive moustache :)(:

There's A, who is somehow geeky and scientis-ty and loves lab work. She has cero interest in the world and feels uncomfortable when men pay attention to her. She loves sci-fy and is a massive consumer of non sexual content fanfic. She wants to have one day her own lab or research industry. Her future is planned and organized. She dosen't see the point of romantic relationships. she dosen't makes friends easily but once she considers you her friend she will be the most loyal friend you could have.

There is C., who is a poetry writer, equal rights activist, writer of politic essays and reader of too deep stuff. She makes friends easily and will hear you all night if you know how to tell a story. She is the one that not only talks with men but also eats them for breakfast. She is convinced women are far superior than men and seems to be right so far. She wants to be president because to be emperor of the world seems like too much trouble.

There is A. C., who is very relaxed, messy as hell, massive consumer of poetry, pop culture, rom-com movies and period books. She wants to be an historian or a librarian. She is most happy in an old library or bookstore surrounded by books and the smell of old paper and knowledge. She stills day dreams about meeting the man of her life, have a glorious family and retire to a horse farm.

And there is L who just wants be out doors, dreams about jumping from a plane and from the Angel fall in Venezuela. She wants to be and adventurer like Lara Croft but far more BAMF. She is competitive and reckless. Knows about weapons and martial arts and has beaten once or twice a few men that touch her with out her permission. She will make friends easily but has too much expectations about her friends. She will give you her full undivided attention for days at a time if there is something new and exiting she could learn from you. She is still bummed about not being an astronaut or an experimental pilot.

And finally there is me. Who lives with all of them in my head and has to plays referee to them all :)

So, Today we watched The Artist, Hugo and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

The Artist and Hugo are such beautiful movies about movies :) Both are very different and very nostalgic and kind of wonderful on their own way. Hugo is lovely and kind of steam-punk which just adds to the loveliness of it all. And the artist is most definitely a nostalgic trip on silent films. So lovely and whit such amazing actors. It can not be easy to act all the way with out relying on words to tell at least part of the story.

TTSP is a really really good thriller. Is a smart movie that keeps you wondering what is the truth behind the story all the way and doesn't gives the answer until the end. Quite frankly I loved it. It was intense and complicated and just wonderful. Like a good mystery book. And the fact that is full of amazing english actors does not all.

I go for equality, no matter what.

To be a feminist is to defend the right of millions of girls to acces quality education at any level in any field of their liking. To defend the right of million of women to chose between being (getting) pregnant or not, the right to tell a guy to fuck off, the right to defend myself, my kids, my body as MINE. To defend the right of millions of women to have monetary independency. To defend the right to choose who to love and how to be loved.

I wish for the day in which things like "you hit like a girl" or "stop being such a woman" will not only stop being derogatory but will lose purpose because it will not make sense.

And phrases like "you know he/she/it is black/jew/gay/muslim" will be answered with "irrelevant" and life will move on without prejudice.

The day in which you can say you love someone and just leave it at that, not having to box yourself in to a category just because the person you love has a certain sex/gender.

I do declare myself to be a feminist, gay rights, prochoice, anti-violence, anticruelty (with all kinds of animal even sapines ones), tree-huger, rainbow surfer, animal talker supporter.
